About the book
To mark the opening of the 2017 Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, China, Tianda Institute has officially released a monumental record of the development of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) – Global Comments and Reports on Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative, as a tribute to this forum and China’s broader achievements in host diplomacy during 2017.
The BRI comprises the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which were first proposed by CPC General Secretary and Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visits to Central Asia in September 2013 and Southeast Asia in October in the same year, respectively. Developed by the CPC Central Committee with Xi Jinping at the helm, the Initiative represents China’s overarching diplomacy towards neighbouring countries in the era since the 18th CPC National Congress, and puts forward a unique vision of economic globalisation and an extensive platform for building a community with a shared future for mankind, as proposed by President Xi. Since their launch, the BRI, as well as the Silk Road Fund and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank designed to power the Initiative financially, have been well received by the international community and attracted a large number of participants. Rooted in a new mindset, the BRI is set to connect China with over 60 countries and territories along the trade routes in an unprecedented way, allowing more than four billion people access to abundant opportunities and shared prosperity via win-win cooperation across the revitalised ancient silk roads.
As the overall planning, strategic focus and specific policies for development of the BRI are continuously calibrated and optimised, and various infrastructure projects take shape, the policy, infrastructure, trade, financial and people-to-people connectivity along the trade routes has been enhanced, guided by the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits advocated by President Xi. It has been proven that the BRI is an open and inclusive plan rather than an exclusive one; a real chorus comprising all the countries along the routes, rather than a solo for China itself; and a platform for countries to align their development strategies in a complementary way, rather than an alternative to existing mechanisms or initiatives for regional cooperation. The BRI has already benefitted the world as a whole, and will continue to do so.
Totaling nearly 800,000 words, the book incorporates 300 influential opinion pieces and reports on the BRI from prominent think tanks and mainstream media outlets in more than 100 countries and territories on five continents. Special focus is given to in-depth articles on how President Xi has led and promoted the implementation of the Initiative over the past three years. We believe this book will be a valuable resource for experts, scholars and those involved in the development of the BRI, or who hope to study President Xi’s all-round opening-up vision and globalisation strategy.
