Li Gang Might be the One First One to Call for the Application of the “Rule of Law”

Yi Heng
2010-11-12

The Li Gang incident unveiled the general public’s abhorrence towards judicial injustice. The traffic accident caused widespread concern as the perpetrator shouted “My Dad is Li Gang” which increased the complications and severity of the case.

If the incident took place in a society where fairness and justice were held as basic values, the perpetrator Li Qiming might not be jailed and his father would not get involved as few charged with vehicular manslaughter are imprisoned in western societies. In a society with growing citisen awareness, the rule of law protects not only the general public but also those who hold power and law enforcement officers.

In the long run, PRC government should prioritise the establishment of a society under the rule of law and ensure that all are equal in the eyes of law to strengthen the general public’s confidence in the administration.
