Cross-Strait Military Mutual Trust Mechanism Proposed to Combat Taiwan’s Arms Procurement

Ma Ying-jeou’s wavering policy on Mainland China, evidenced by his remarks on peaceful cross-strait development and contradictory support for military procurement package, clearly conveys the message that Taiwan administration plans to deal with the Mainland through both peaceful dialogue and military deployment. However, in fact, Taiwan has no chance to win over its neighbor in terms of military force thus could only resort to peaceful approach and soft power competition. As Beijing is now putting forward the idea of establishing military mutual trust mechanism as a gesture of goodwill, is it a good time for Ma Ying-jeou to re-examine the current policy?
