New cross-strait unification model needed

WU Junfei
2015-11-25

The cross-Strait unification model advocating “One Country, Two Territories” and institutional innovation represents a critical summation of all its predecessors in  this debate, one that takes full account of the history and realities of the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan instead of blindly following authorities and books. The model in essence upholds the “One China” principle while recognising the facts that China’s reunification has yet to be accomplished as the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan have long been two de facto separate political entities for historical reasons, and that the more powerful Mainland has been recognised as the representative of China by the majority of countries. It is thus proposed that the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan should negotiate on an equal footing and follow the premise of safeguarding and promoting the reform and opening-up of the Mainland to create a new national entity that enables cross-Strait unification.
