In recent years, China has focused on its military and economic rise in the world arena, but has neglected the need to promote the essence of traditional Chinese culture in a way comprehensible to the rest of the world, so as to clarify what Chinese civilisation can offer in tackling disturbing governance crisis around the world. The mere emphasis on political and military strength cannot by itself drive the robust rise of a country; it is more essential to build core civilisation values that may resonate with other countries. In this regard, the “Japanese experience” remains undoubtedly worthy of reference for China amid the intensifying US-China competition.
