Seiji Maehara’s Resignation and Japan-Korea Relations

Japan’s Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara stepped down after being criticized for receiving a $3,050 political donation from a South Korean national living in Japan. The political funding scandal came at a time when Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) was locked in a budget showdown with opposition parties that control the Diet’s upper house. However, the resignation of the 48-year-old former DPJ president also revealed a subtle relationship between Japan and Korea.
