Reflecting on China-Vietnam Dispute over South China Sea Claims

If China escalates the long-running dispute over South China Sea territory by declaring a war on Vietnam, tension between China and neighboring countries will be heightened. China’s allies in the Southeastern Asia that were also involved in the territorial scuffle with the country would turn their back on China and take the side of U.S., creating an alliance against China, which is of substantial risk to the peaceful rise of the country. In that case, China will have to pay more costs than the benefits out of its victory over Vietnamese.
