For quite a long time, overseas Chinese have been excluded from the policy-making process of governments. It is in current context of political pluralism that they are beginning to participate in the politics of countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia, and with great success.
There are two main reasons why overseas Chinese are encountering problems entering into politics. Firstly, elements of racial discrimination and other adverse factors in the selection system persist. Secondly, overseas Chinese, “new immigrants” in particular, are yet to develop competitive political strength. In a world where universal values are deeply rooted, one cannot be approved and accepted by the mainstream unless he or she embraces the same values of that society.
